The company was founded by Fred Hervey in 1951 in El Paso, Texas. He originally named the store “Circle K”, to emphasize the familiar shape of the “circled K” logo. Fred Hervey opened the first Circle K store in 1951, but the company did not become a chain until 1958, when the second store was opened. A few years later, in 1963, Circle K went public on the American Stock Exchange.

In 1999, Circle K declared bankruptcy and was subsequently acquired by Canadian firm Alimentation Couche-Tard in 2003. With the acquisition, Circle K became part of one of the largest convenience store chains in the world.
